Utah Travel Center BLM Lands • Cedar City District

Southwestern Utah - 6,034,741 acres

Canaan Mountains

This scenic district stretches from Utah's Dixie and the Nevada state line, eastward across five counties to the Grand Staircase of Vermilion, White and Pink Cliffs, the Circle Cliffs, and the Escalante River, including much of the area encompassed by the newly designated Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The scenery highlights virtually all of the Scenic Byway and Backway tours of southwestern Utah, including the Smithsonian Butte National Backcountry Byway. BLM lands offer the Red Cliffs and Calf Creek Recreation Areas, the canyon country of the Paria and Escalante Rivers, Red and Canaan Mountains. Visitors also enjoy viewing wild horses, and picking pine nuts in the west desert areas. Backcountry and day hikes abound. Attractions in this district are accessible from Kanab, Cedar City, Beaver, St. George and Escalante.

The Cedar City District Office is located in southwestern Utah in the Great Basin region. Sagebrush flats, juniper-clad foothills and low mountains characterize this area. The Parowan Gap, a deep, narrow gorge cuts through the Red Hills. This geographic area is distorted by faulting and folding on an unusual scale. The Parowan Gap is also known for the site of Fremont Indian petroglyphs incised on its walls. Contact 176 East D.L. Sargent Drive, Cedar City, UT 84720, 435-586-2401.

The Henry Mountain Field Station is a one-stop center for local BLM, Forest Service, and National Park Service Information. Contact 406 South 100 West, PO Box 99, Hanksville UT 84734, 435-542-3461.

The St. George Field Office is located in the extreme southwest corner of Utah. The southern region of the Great Basin, and the northern part of the Mojave Desert merge here at Utah's lowest elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level. The warm, dry climate lures thousands to experience Utah's Dixie of Joshua trees and red cliffs. Baker Dam is a fun place to fish for browns and rainbow trout in this picturesque reservoir or along the creek below it. Contact 345 E. Riverside Dr., St. George, UT 84770, 435-688-3200.

The Kanab Field Office is located in the southeast section on the Utah-Arizona border, near Lake Powell and Arizona's Grand Canyon. East of Kanab are the stately Vermilion Cliffs that run northward through open country. The start, salmon-color hills north of Kanab are known as the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Contact 318 North 100 East, Kanab, UT 84741, 435-644-4600.
