In
an age where cruising the web from an office chair is
as adventurous as some get, it's nice to know Park City
offers a multitude of real life adventures for both Indiana
Jones thrill-seekers and those who prefer sampling life
in more contemplative fashion. Some suggestions for breaking
out of the old routine:
Park
City and hot air ballooning
just go together. It's a rare morning, summer or winter,
that you won't see the colorful fabric of a hot air balloon
hovering over our mountain landscapes. A number of hot
air balloon companies in town offer flights of varying
length, including complimentary champagne. What a way
to start the day — with a bit of bubbly and a bird's eye
view of the world!
Several
local stables offer horseback
riding tours for equestrians of all abilities.
Meander through stands of aspens or gallop your steed
through an open field.
Park
City Mountain Resort offers the thrill of the Alpine
Slide (and a beautiful chairlift ride over
alpine terrain), and the Little
Miner's Park for the youngsters. Try the bungy
trampoline and practice your somersaults.
Get
an ego-boost by golfing
at 7,000 feet. When players tee it up at this altitude,
they'll notice the ball soaring further than ever before.
Because the air is thinner at high altitudes, there is
less gravity to bring the ball to earth, so golfers can
leave their long drivers at home! Park City's four nearby
public and two private courses are among the best in the
state — and certainly the most scenic. The Park City Municipal
Golf Course is open daily and boasts abundant lakes and
trees. The course is a par 72, 6,400-yard course and rates
a 69.7. The Homestead Golf Course in nearby Midway is
a quick 20-minute drive from Park City. The course plays
7,000 yards and has a par of 72. Amenities include a clubhouse,
driving range, chipping green, practice bunker, and the
quaint beauty and fine restaurants of The Homestead Inn.
The Park City area also has two private golf courses,
The Jeremy Ranch Golf Course, designed by Arnold Palmer,
and Jack Nicklaus-designed Park Meadows Golf Course. Also
nearby are Mountain Dell and Wasatch Mountain State Park
golf courses — both public courses nestled in the hills,
featuring 36 holes each. The Wasatch Mountain State Park
will be home to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games cross country,
biathlon and nordic combined events.
Water
enthusiasts can enjoy all of the expected aquatic
sports at one of several nearby reservoirs.
Jordanelle, the area's newest reservoir, is just a few
miles from the heart of Park City, and offers jet ski
rentals, a café, camping facilities and the opportunity
for swimming, boating, windsurfing, fishing, or simply
gazing at her glittering surface. The Deer Creek Reservoir,
Echo Reservoir and Rockport Reservoirs are all within
a 30-mile radius of Park City as well.
Try
your luck fishing
for rainbow trout in one of our crystalline rivers or
streams. Fly fishing opportunities are abundant in the
area, and several local sporting good shops offer equipment
rental, lessons and guided trips with local experts who
know the area well. If you're lucky, some may even show
you their secret fishing spots!
The
Park City Silver Mine Adventure
will give you a thrill with its 1,500-foot descent into
a mineshaft at one of the oldest continuously running
mine operations in the country. Wind through the cavernous
tunnels in an old fashioned mine train and get a chill
from the damp underground conditions and the mining ghost
stories your guide will relate.
Tennis,
anyone? See how high the ball flies at this altitude.
Two outdoor public courts are located at City Park, and
a slew of additional outdoor courts are available for
paid use at the Park City Racquet Club or Prospector Athletic
Club.
Hang
out at our local climbing gym
or join a pick-up basketball
game in City Park. Whether your idea of adventure
is lazily casting streamside, or careening down the tracks
of the Alpine Slide, Park City offers adventures for enthusiasts
of all ages and interests.
