There
was a time in Park City's history when the town was mainly
a winter resort community. When the snow stopped flying
and skis were stored away, local ski resort employees,
restaurateurs and shopkeepers locked up their doors, and
took to the hills to fish, hike and relax. In the 1970's,
town leaders began creating special events during the
summer months to attract visitors to reinvigorate the
sleepy summer economy. That effort, coupled with the innate
sense of fun Park City residents have always had, resulted
in Park City becoming a longtime host to special events
of all kinds. Park City has gotten so proficient at creating
and hosting events, in fact, that many attribute this
strength as being one of the reasons Park City was chosen
to host so many events during the 2002 Olympic Winter
Games. The residents, employees and volunteers of Park
City have proven themselves over and over in their ability,
and their love for hosting memorable, high quality events
for visitors and locals alike.
Park
City and special events simply go hand in hand. "Events
work so well here because of our environment," says Barb
Clark, Chamber & Visitors Bureau events director. "Park
City works for artistic and cultural events because it's
so aesthetically pleasing and awe inspiring. And the geography
we've been blessed with is a big selling point for bringing
in sporting or recreational events. Our proximity to Salt
Lake City with its international airport makes Park City
very accessible for people to get in and out."
Today
Park City is a thriving year-round community, with no
"gone fishing" signs to be found. The town doesn't need
a special event to draw summer visitors anymore, but it
does love to keep its visitors entertained while they're
here. Once summer hits her stride, Park City hosts a multitude
of sporting events including: June's
Pedalfest —
a cycling festival for bike enthusiasts of all ages and
abilities; the Park City Marathon;
a NORBA national mountain bike competition in July; the
Novell Senior PGA Golf Tournament
at the Park Meadows Country Club; and a brand new event
for the town, the Park City Motorcycle
Week mid-September, featuring the only known
vintage motorcycle road race in the country.
Those
with an Epicurean bent will enjoy July's
Taste of Park City, where the town's lower
Main Street becomes a stage for sampling culinary delights
from a variety of Park City restaurants. Or they can visit
the Wednesday afternoon Farmer's Market at the Park City
Resort Center before heading to City Park for the free
weekly concerts that have become a mainstay of Park City
social life.
Music
has a strong hold in Park City, with regular musical events
offered including Saturday night
Utah Symphony performances under the stars
at Deer Valley Resort; Saturday afternoon live music on
historic Main Street; Jazz at the Main Street Mall on
Saturday nights; as well as musical events hosted by the
Summit Institute for the Arts and Humanities and the Eccles
Center for the Performing Arts, as well as a variety of
local and national musicians performing at nightclubs
throughout Park City weekly.
Showcase
musical events include the Park
City International Music Festival, the Founder's
Title Folk and Bluegrass
Festival and the Fidelity
Investments Park City International Jazz Festival.
Art
lovers can enjoy Friday night gallery
strolls the first Friday of each month, or
experience the extravagance of the 30th annual
Park City Art Festival in August. Over 200
artists and craftsmen set up booths up and down Park City's
Main Street to display and sell their pottery, clothing,
metal work, wood work, photography, textiles, jewelry
and more. Food and live entertainment provided for shoppers
and browsers round out the fun. It's been said, "Only
the bore gets bored." With the variety of exciting special
events our town hosts each year, you certainly won't have
a chance to be bored — or boring - in Park City!
