UTC Points of Interest Geography • Big Rock Candy Mountain

Big Rock Candy Mountain (Sevier County) is five miles north of Marysvale on US-89. It is a cluster of irregular, multi-colored hills. This unusual site was named by Ken Olsen and others during the summer of 1929 when they jokingly placed a sign with this name onto a post at the base of the mountain. Haywire Mac (Harry McClintock), a brakeman on the nearby Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, had just written the song "Big Rock Candy Mountain." Olsen also put up a sign calling the nearby spring "Lemonade Springs." The names held. Today the area has been commercialized with food, lodging, and neon lights.
