"Markagunt" is a Piute word meaning "Highland of Trees." The Markagunt Plateau is located on State Hwy 14 from Cedar City to its junction with US 89. This route is one of the most traveled areas in Southern Utah. The route starts with the sheer cliffs of the Ashdown Gorge, then enters into the Dixie National Forest with the beautiful red limestone amphitheater and green trees. The Navajo Lake is a favorite spot for fishing anld camping. The Markagunt Scenic Byway is 40 miles long and takes 1 hour to complete.
