Alta

Alta is located in the upper region of Little Cottonwood Canyon, within the Wasatch / Cache National Forest. One of the most well-known resorts, is the second oldest ski area in the United States. Noted for some of the best and most consistent snow conditions in the world, Alta often logs more than 500 inches of snow in a season. Read more Alta history.

Season: Traditional opening is mid-November; closing mid-April. Scheduled Season November 20, 2002- Mid April, 2003.

Hours of Operation: 9:15 am to 4:30 PM, half day hours: 9:15 am to 1:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM

Elevation & Vertical Drop: 8,530 foot base, 10,550 foot top, 2,020 foot vertical drop.

Runs: 25% beginner, 40% intermediate, 35% advanced, approximately 40 named runs and 50 acres of snowmaking, 2,200 skiable acres. 500 inch average seasonal snowfall. Two Triple, four double and four surface lifts.

Average Annual Snowfall: depths of up to 15 feet in the spring. Average temperature is 20 to 25 degrees.

Group Rates: For every 20 people in a group, the 21st ticket is free. You must come as a group to be entitled to this rate. The group rate is not available to travel agents.

Day Care: Alta children’s Center is a state licensed day care, owned and operated by Redwood Pre-School Inc. The center provides daycare for children age 3 months to 12 years, where they can play, learn and create. Call 801-742-3042. Hours 8:30 to 5:00

Road Restrictions: At times, Little Cottonwood Canyon Road, State Highway 210, may be restricted to travel. For up to date road condition information, tune into radio station AM 530. State law requires vehicles to carry chains or have snow tires on the vehicle from November 1 through May 1.

Cross Country Skiing: A 2-mile abandoned road is available for skating, skiing, and touring.

Photography: Photography is provided by Peak Photo (801)742-2100. They are located at the top of Sugarloaf Albion, and Germania chair lifts, to help create fun memories of your Alta vacation with a Mountain Ski Portrait. There is no shooting fee or obligation. You will be able to look at your portraits at the end of the day to decide if you’d like to order.
