Southwestern Utah: 6,034,741 acres

This scenic district stretches from Utah’s Dixie and the Nevada state line, eastward across five counties to the Grand Staircase of Vermilion, White and Pink Cliffs, the Circle Cliffs, and the Escalante River, including much of the area encompassed by the newly designated Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The scenery highlights virtually all of the Scenic Byway and Backway tours of southwestern Utah, including the Smithsonian Butte National Backcountry Byway.

BLM lands offer the Red Cliffs and Calf Creek Recreation Areas, the canyon country of the Paria and Escalante Rivers, Red and Canaan Mountains. Visitors also enjoy viewing wild horses, and picking pine nuts in the west desert areas. Backcountry and day hikes abound. Attractions in this district are accessible from Kanab, Cedar City, Beaver, St. George and Escalante.

The Cedar City District Office is located in southwestern Utah in the Great Basin region. Sagebrush flats, juniper-clad foothills and low mountains characterize this area. The Parowan Gap, a deep, narrow gorge cuts through the Red Hills. This geographic area is distorted by faulting and folding on an unusual scale. The Parowan Gap is also known for the site of Fremont Indian petroglyphs incised on its walls.
